Dalarna University was established in 1977, and today has approximately 18 000 students who study on campus and on-line (net-based learning). Modern and dynamic, Dalarna University has a progressive approach to teaching, learning, and research. It offers a multicultural environment as a result of its many international students, most who are from Europe and Asia. An asset to the campus environment, they contribute greatly to student life and the university perspective in general.
Dalarna University offers four main areas of educational programme focus: Teacher Education; Nursing; Computer and IT Studies, and Languages. A number of courses and Bachelor and Master programmes are offered in English and can be taken either on campus or on-line (net-based learning).
Dalarna University has partnerships with universities in both Sweden and other countries, and collaborative projects with both the public and private sectors. Partnerships with other Swedish universities enable the establishment of new educational programmes. Collaboration with the public and private sectors affords students practical and real-life experiences. Everybody gains from such collaboration, and at the same time, students are able to network with a view to future employment.
When it comes to the development of the Internet as a pedagogical tool, Dalarna University is second to none. About 60 percent of students study from home no matter where "home" might be. They use the Internet and web-TV as main interactive channels to participate, for example, in seminars and to contact their professors and fellow students. The university intends to extend its involvement further in this important and developing area of research.
