The University of Limerick (UL) was established in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick and classified as the University of Limerick in 1989. UL is an independent, internationally focussed university with over 11,000 students and 1,300 staff. We are a young, energetic and enterprising university with a proud record of innovation in education and excellence in research and scholarship.

Our mission is to promote and advance learning and knowledge through teaching, research and scholarship in an environment which encourages innovation and upholds the principles of free enquiry and expression. Particular attention is paid to the generation of knowledge which is relevant to the needs of Ireland's continuing socio-economic development.

UL offers a range of programmes up to doctorate and post doctorate levels in the disciplines of Business, Education and Health Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. It has academic links with Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

The University is situated on a superb riverside campus of over 133 hectares with the River Shannon as a unifying focal point. Outstanding recreational, cultural and sporting facilities further enhance this exceptional learning and working environment. The Campus is located 5km from Limerick City and 20km from Shannon International Airport. The campus is in both County Limerick (South Bank) and County Clare (North Bank).Adjacent to the University is the National Technology Park (NTP), Ireland's first science/technology park (263 hectares), which is home to over 80 organisations employing over 4,000 people. There is a close interaction between the National Technology Park and UL.

A nationwide survey of students in Ireland has rated the University of Limerick the most popular university in the country with an 85% satisfaction rating. The survey also found UL to be the most active college, supporting its title as Ireland’s sporting campus. The survey, commissioned by CourseHub.ie, asked students to share their honest opinions on their course and college life, received over 10,000 responses making it one of the largest of its kind ever conducted in Ireland.

Coupled with this The University of Limerick welcomes the findings of the recent QS Stars™ report which awarded UL top scores across a number of key areas, in particular graduate employability and innovation and knowledge transfer. The QS Stars™ provides an independent evaluation of some of the world’s leading universities. The report also awarded UL 5-star ratings across the areas of infrastructure, teaching,engagement and internationalisation.

The University of Limerick has in place support structures for personal (health, counseling etc) and Academic welfare (Maths and Science Learning Centers; a Writing Centre and Careers Service), with copious amounts of on campus accommodation on a self contained campus. The campus alongside the modern teaching areas and laboratories offers, International standard sporting facilities including a 50m swimming pool, a sports arena with indoor running track, and numerous all weather pitches, banks, shop and entertainment facilities.

The university hosts 4 Research Institutions, and numerous research centers and groups. It has been successful in commercializing its research in a number of areas, developing spin out companies.

Services & Facilities

The University is a self contained campus on a 133 hectare site. In term time the campus accommodation is home for 2500 students, with copious amounts of local accommodation being available. Apart from modern well equipped teaching facilities, the University provides medical, pastoral, counselling and careers services for the well being of students. Academically there is a writing centre a maths learning centre and a science learning centre.

Student Life

The University of Limerick is 5Km form the city of Limerick, with its historic John’s Castle and treaty stone. Being situated on the west coast of Ireland, allows for easy access to the remarkable beaches and countryside of Kerry and Clare that are renowned around the world. The University has a plethora of clubs and societies, many utilising the international standard sporting facilities, and the universities outdoor centre situated on Lough Derg, a few miles away. Known for its sporting achievements, the University has hosted the Special Olympics, training for a number of national and international teams and individual sports stars. The student union block known as the stables hosts event rooms, a shop bars and the weekly farmers market. University of Limerick students are known for their interaction with the community, with the University President conferring volunteering awards each year.
