Loughborough is a fantastic place to study and work, boasting unrivalled sporting achievement, internationally acclaimed research and outstanding teaching quality – attributes that helped us to secure the prestigious Sunday Times ‘2008/2009 University of the Year’ award.
Our attractive single-site campus provides an environment that is stimulating and supportive, offering first-rate facilities for both students and staff. There is a real pride in the University that touches everyone associated with it, and in this our centenary year that pride continues to grow.

With its impressive 437 acre single-site campus, one of the largest in the UK, Loughborough University is less than two miles from the M1, close to East Midlands Airport and only 90 minutes by train from London St Pancras.
Lying in the Borough of Charnwood, in the county of Leicestershire, Loughborough itself is a thriving large town that is a prominent high-technology centre for the East Midlands and a magnet for inward investment.
The town is also close to some fantastic countryside. Charnwood gets its name from the rocky Charnwood Forest to the west, now being replanted as the heart of the new National Forest. It contains some of the oldest rocks and fossils in Britain.
In the centre of the area is the broad flat plain of the River Soar and to the east are the rounded rolling hills of the Leicestershire Wolds - with some of England's loveliest and most unspoilt villages. Close by is Bradgate Park (dating from at least 1240) with its roaming herds of red and fallow deer. The Park will be forever associated with England's 'Queen for Nine Days', the Lady Jane Grey, who lost her crown and her head to Mary Tudor, eldest daughter of Henry VIII.
Within easy travelling distance of Loughborough are the major cities of Leicester and Nottingham, boasting an array of shops, cafes, bars, clubs and other leisure facilities. Slightly further afield are the dramatic views of the Derbyshire Peak District, and Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Forest, home of the legendary Robin Hood.
Campus facilities Loughborough University has a wide range of facilities that are open to students, staff, visitors and the local community.
Amenities on campus include lecture theatres, laboratories, a major library and extensive IT network, an Arts Centre, two theatres, conference and hotel accommodation, restaurants, banks, shops, a health centre and Loughborough Students' Union, which is uniquely owned and run by our students.
The University has the country's largest concentration of world-class training facilities across a wide range of sports, available for the enthusiastic amateur as well as elite performers.
These include an indoor athletics centre and outdoor stadium, sports halls and all-weather pitches, a 50 metre swimming pool, squash, badminton and netball courts, an indoor tennis centre and outdoor courts, and state of the art fitness centres. National and regional centres for many sports are also located on campus, including the ECB National Cricket Centre and the LTA Tennis Academy.
The locality and amenities at the University add up to a superb venue for both business conferences and private functions. Imago, the conference and events unit of the University, offers an array of facilities for meetings, seminars, conferences, exhibitions and events.
Throughout the year the University and the Students’ Union organise a variety of events, many of which are open to the local community. These include the annual bonfire and firework display, a variety of musical and theatrical performances and a series of lectures by Loughborough academics and guest speakers.
Unrivalled sporting achievement
Loughborough is the UK’s premier university for sport and has perhaps the best integrated sports development environment in the world. The campus is home to some of the country’s leading coaches, sports scientists and support staff. It also has the country’s largest concentration of high quality sports training facilities, equipment and support resources in the world.
Loughborough University has made a unique contribution to the world of sport for over sixty years, bringing together exceptional athletes, facilities, coaching and research expertise, and extensive partnerships with major sports organisations.
Some of the most celebrated names in sport – including world record breaking athletes Sebastian Coe, Paula Radcliffe, David Moorcroft and Steve Backley; probably the greatest-ever Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson; England cricketer Monty Panesar; and World Cup winning England rugby coach Clive Woodward – have all studied at the University.
Today more than 250 international level athletes, many of whom will be household names in the future, are current Loughborough students. The University’s sports scholarship programme – the largest in the UK – enables the finest young athletes to excel in both their academic and sporting achievements. As well as supporting elite athletes the University also provides sporting opportunities for enthusiasts of all levels and abilities and has the country’s largest intramural hall sport programme.
In competition Loughborough boasts an unparalleled record of sporting success, having dominated the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships for more than thirty years. At the Beijing Olympics Loughborough’s largest ever international contingent was in action – a staggering 56 past and present students and University-based athletes represented their country at the Olympics and Paralympics. Loughborough collected silver and bronze at the Games.
Beijing was the latest in a long line of major sporting events involving Loughborough University athletes. Its students have been in action at every summer Olympics since the last London Games in 1948, and at the 2010 Commonwealth Games Loughborough athletes won 44 medals overall, including six golds, which would have placed the University eighth in the medal table.
It is not just on the field that Loughborough excels. The University’s headline-hitting performance is crucially underpinned by internationally renowned teaching and research in sports science and engineering. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the research of Loughborough’s School of Sport and Exercise Sciences was assessed as the best in the country, and in 2007 the University opened a new £15 million state-of-the-art Sports Technology Institute to develop cutting-edge technology for the sport and leisure sector.
Celebrating the arts
The Arts have always been an important part of Loughborough University. Over the years we have developed a lively and original arts programme which is enjoyed by students, staff and the local community.
By embracing the Arts we have been able to enhance the intellectual, social and cultural environment of the University and build links with a diverse range of groups and organisations from outside the campus.
The University’s Arts Centre offers a variety of events throughout the year and is the hub of activity for a wide range of instrumental and vocal tuition for students from well-qualified and experienced teachers.
It has a 300-seat theatre, a 100-seat studio and a 250-seat auditorium, where concerts and dance and drama productions are staged by visiting artists and the University’s own highly talented students. There is also a thriving choir, orchestra and concert band, which are open to all students and staff without audition, and give regular performances.
The University Arts Programme commissions and presents new work by national and internationally recognised artists. This involves a programme of performances, installations and interventions, complemented by talks and discussions.
Loughborough is the only university to win The Times Higher Education ‘Best Student Experience’ four times. This highlights the excellent community atmosphere, extra-curricular activities and societies, and the good environment on campus and around the University.
The Students’ Union
The Students’ Union is a key player in creating the ‘Loughborough Experience’. Owned, controlled and run by its members it is one of the very best in the country, offering an unrivalled array of facilities and services.
The Union aims to enhance the ‘Loughborough Experience’ for all its students, through participation in the many clubs and societies, voluntary projects, charity fundraising or taking a role as a representative.
All of these help students to develop leadership, organisational and communication skills, ensuring that from your first day you are immersed into hall life and community spirit.
We were recently awarded ‘Best International Students’ Union of the Year 2009’ and in 2008 we were credited as being the greenest Students’ Union in the Country by the National Union of Students (NUS).
Clubs and Societies
Loughborough Students’ Union has nearly 50 Societies offering everything from Hot Air Ballooning to Surfing. And with over 50 sports Clubs in the Athletic Union, there is a sports activity for everyone.
Clubs and Societies are a great way to get involved at Loughborough and make new friends – particularly the international societies which attract membership from around the world. We also have active associations who are there to support, develop and campaign on behalf of under-represented groups.

Doing your bit
Loughborough Students’ Rag is the biggest and best student fundraising organisation in the country, last year breaking its own national record, raising nearly one million pounds for local and national charities.
Students have every opportunity to help with the great work that Rag does by taking part in a number of possible events, from jumping out of an aeroplane to climbing five of the highest peaks in the UK!
Our Action service provides a huge range of opportunities in the local community for student volunteers. It has over 550 volunteers and runs over 30 projects of its own as well as with both local and national charities. The range of projects is vast, but if there is something you want to do that they currently don’t offer they will do everything they can to set it up for you. In 2007 we were awarded the Investors in Volunteers award.
