Información sobre la institución

The University of Cumbria is pleased to welcome Radio 1's Big Weekend to Carlisle.
We are one of Britain's newest universities, but we have a history of educating professionals going back over 150 years. We were formed in 2007 from Cumbria Institute of the Arts, St Martin's College and the Cumbrian campus of UCLan. With academic strengths in education, healthcare, sports, visual and performing arts, humanities, social science, law and criminology, science, outdoors, forestry and land studies we will have a great course to start your career.

Our campuses are in Carlisle, Lancaster and Newton Rigg, Penrith. These are lively, safe, student-friendly cities with a lower than average cost of living. Transport links are excellent. We are on the West Coast mainline rail network and close to the M6 motorway. Carlisle to Lancaster is approximately one hour in a car or train. Lancaster to Manchester is just 55 mins on half hourly rail service.

The campuses are compact and situated within walking distance of the city centres. The great outdoors is on our doorstep from city centre parks to National Parks and the university's clubs and societies will help you to take advantage of all that our spectacular surroundings have to offer.

Student Life

Carlisle has a vibrant nightlife centred around the beautiful pedestrian centre and its winding ancient alleyways. Bars and clubs cater for all tastes and there are a number of live music venues. The multi-purpose Sands Centre hosts live gigs from major bands and top class touring theatre and dance as well as being a sports centre.

The cathedral, the stylish Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and the Stanwix Arts Theatre all host a range of arts events through the year.

Carlisle stands on the edge of the Lake District and the Solway Firth. Outdoor pursuits are on your doorstep. Everything from fell walking to sailing is there.

Carlisle boasts a strong sporting tradition with a football League team, Carlisle United, a long tradition of Rugby Union and a popular race course.

Lancaster

Lancaster is often known as the "Big little city". Home to another university, the nightlife of the city has a significant student focus. There are a number of night clubs, bars to suit all tastes and live music venues abound.
For theatre lovers The Dukes Theatre provides repertory theatre all year round and a BFI screen as well as the nationally acclaimed summer Promenade Theatre season. The Grand Theatre is one of the oldest operating theatres in the country and hosts touring shows and amateur productions.

The city has a distinct outdoors feel and there are many local (as well as university) clubs for outdoor pursuits; particularly popular are running, especially fell running, cycling, fell walking (Lancaster has both the Lakes and the Forest of Bowland on its doorstep), sailing in Morecambe and potholing just over the border in North Yorkshire.

League football has come to the area for the first time in 2007 with the promotion of Morecambe FC to the football league. Go along and support the Shrimps!
