Central European University (CEU) is an internationally recognized US-degree granting institution of graduate education in the social sciences and the humanities. CEU serves as an advanced center of research and policy analysis and facilitates academic dialogue, while preparing its graduates to serve as the next generation of leaders and scholars in this region and beyond. Through its active recruitment team CEU attracts more and more young people to consider this university as a feasible opportunity to continue their education at a graduate level.
CEU is an international university in the truest sense: Its students come from almost 100 countries, the majority from Central and Eastern Europe and Russia; its faculty, from more than 30 countries--with the mix of nationalities increasing every year.
In order to attract outstanding individuals, irrespective of their financial situation, CEU offers merit based scholarships supporting the majority of our students during their studies. Central European University is committed to providing a range of support services to guide students from the point of admission, throughout their enrollment, and after graduation. Student support is an essential component of student life in this internationally-diverse graduate community. As a key point of interaction between student expectations and institutional needs, CEU's student support services seek to contribute to the overall student experience as an integral part of the educational process.
Student Services at CEU form an integrated student support unit, including activities such as enrollment planning, student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, student records, student life, housing arrangements, career services and alumni relations, and research into the student experience. In the framework of a holistic approach to student development and support, Student Services are also the contact point for other functions such as student out-of-class involvement, student participation in the university governance as well as in the Student Union. In a conscious effort to reflect the broad geographic diversity of the CEU student body, CEU Student Services have a multinational staff.
All CEU services for students aim to translate the mission and policies of the university into effective and consistent support programs, serving multiple roles:
* enabling knowledge about, and communication with, students that go beyond the classroom;
* fostering individual, cultural and social development;
* enhancing the institutional capacity to provide an integrated and reflective services program.
Vice President for Student Services
The Vice President for Student Services (VPSS) oversees all activities and services provided within the Student Services structure and serves as a liaison on admissions and academic matters to the Academic Pro-Rector, the academic departments and Senate/faculty committees. Special responsibilities include student recruitment, research projects and student counseling.
In order to attract outstanding individuals irrespective of their financial situation CEU offers a range of Financial Aid packages supporting the majority of our students during their studies. The main types of CEU Financial Aid include:
CEU Fellowships for Master’s students (full and partial)
Tuition waivers (full and partial)
CEU Doctoral Fellowships for most students pursuing PhD degrees
Externally Funded Financial Aid from the European Commission as well as other private and public donors and organizations including federal loans for US citizens
CEU Alumni Scholarships awarded to students in financial need who have a proven record of leadership in extracurricular activities, community service and civic engagement
In addition to its Financial Aid, CEU rewards academic excellence of its current students through various research grants and achievement awards.
The CEU Business School website provides details on their Financial Aid policy which is different from the rest of CEU.
Students who are interested in applying for CEU Financial Aid must complete the Financial Aid section of the CEU online application form, indicating the type of Financial Aid desired.
The university actively encourages and supports students’ interests and activities. At the start of each academic year, surveys are carried out to find out what these interests may be. Students are invited to submit proposals for new events and activities.
Many clubs are formed to focus on a range of interests, from chess and basketball, to film and literature. There is also a CEU debating society which in previous years has gone on to the European Universities Debating Championship.
CEU supports a Student Activity Fund that enables students to receive support for clubs and activities up to 500 EUR per project. If you wish to apply please fill in the Application Form.
In previous years, there have been a huge number of activities from theater and opera visits, to dance classes and ice skating parties. CEU has two sports centers, organizing aerobics, yoga classes, and tournaments.
CEU provides support for student debates, national and cultural holidays, food-tastings, or parties. There is also an exhibition space within the university showcasing the art of CEU students.
CEU Students participate in mini marathon
Sixty CEU students, led by VP Student Services Peter Johnson, participated on September 26 in the Fun Run, as part of the 25th Budapest Marathon. Despite the rainy weather all runners were in very good mood and finished the 3.5 km without any difficulty. Some have already agreed to sign up for the 7 km distance next year.
Debate Workshop
In October, alumna Maja Nenadovic offered a series of workshops in public speaking, British Parliamentary debate and argumentation. Some 50 students took part in these trainings. Once they were finished, a small group of enthusiasts decided to organize the CEU Debating Society. Debates will take place on weekly basis, as students will prepare to hold a small internal CEU tournament sometime in early spring of 2011. The two best speakers of this tournament will represent CEU at the European Universities Debating Championship 2011 held in Galway, Ireland.
