Información sobre la institución

Exploring new fields, walking new paths. A non-traditional cooperation across subject and faculty borders defines the interdisciplinary approach that is the hallmark of Linköping University (LiU). An entrepreneurial spirit of education characterizes the university´s history. Since its foundation in the 1960´s, the university has established itself as an innovative and modern institution in both education and research. It was first founded as an independent college in 1970 and in 1975 it became Sweden´s sixth university. Today LiU is organized in four faculties:
- Institute of Technology
- Faculty of Arts and Sciences
- Faculty of Health Sciences
- Educational Sciences

The university has developed several unique educational programmes that transcend traditional academic borders. This approach was manifested in the creation of Sweden´s first MSc programme in Industrial Management and Engineering. Many similar ventures have followed, such as the two programmes: Cognitive Science and Information Technology. Combining humanities and social studies with computer science, these programmes aim at a holistic view of information technology.
Interdisciplinarity is a keyword for the university´s research, most notably within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, where research themes - broad problem areas of societal relevance - are addressed: Child Studies, Health and Society, Technology and Social Change, Communication Studies, and Water and Environmental Studies. Research focus in new themes is on Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Food Studies, Culture Studies, and on Aging and Later Life.

Interdisciplinary graduate schools have been established in other areas as well: in physics and materials science, in electronics and automatic control, in computer science, in engineering design, in biomedical science, in industrial management and engineering. IMIE - the International Graduate School in Industrial Management and Engineering - combines the research environments of a technical university and a business school under the same roof.

Student Life

Linköping University is located in the middle of one of Sweden’s most expansive regions, about 150 kilometres south of Stockholm. We have 27,600 students. The majority is studying in Linköping and one fifth in Norrköping. We also have students in Stockholm, at Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies.

In Linköping, most students live in student housing areas situated within cycling distance of the campus. It is a good idea to start queuing and looking for accommodation early on. It can be difficult to find accommodation in Linköping at the start of the autumn term but it might be easier to find something in the surrounding area.
Many students live in co-ed dormitories, which are organised in corridor groups. Each corridor consists of eight student rooms with bathrooms, a shared living room and a shared kitchen. Laundry facilities are available in each building. Each student room is furnished with a bed, a desk, bookshelves and chairs. Students furnish their own bedding.
The voltage in Sweden is 220 volts at 50 Hz. As e.g. British and American outlets may differ from Swedish outlets, you may need a transformer and/or an adapter for your electrical appliances.
In each room there is a socket for fixed telecommunications, but you have to arrange for your own telephone subscription. Most student housing is also prepared for an Internet connection, although you have to reach an agreement with an Internet service provider. For detailed information, please contact the housing company.
The kitchen has a refrigerator, a freezer and an electric stove with an oven, but you have to provide your own kitchenware. Most students cook in the corridor kitchen, but student restaurants and coffee shops are also available.
